Understanding Mood Disorders

Mood disorders encompass a variety of conditions characterized by persistent changes in mood that impact daily functioning. These disorders can range from prolonged periods of sadness and hopelessness to episodes of intense euphoria and energy. They can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background, and can significantly impair one’s quality of life if left untreated.

Common Mood Disorders We Treat

  • Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)

    • Characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, loss of interest or pleasure in most activities, changes in appetite and sleep patterns, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.

    • Individuals may also experience feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt and, in severe cases, thoughts of death or suicide.

  • Bipolar Disorder

    • Marked by extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression).

    • Manic episodes may involve elevated mood, increased energy, reduced need for sleep, and impulsive behavior, while depressive episodes mirror symptoms of Major Depressive Disorder.

  • Persistent Depressive Disorder (PDD)

    • A chronic form of depression with symptoms that last for at least two years.

    • Individuals may experience a consistently low mood, low energy, poor self-esteem, and a sense of hopelessness.

  • Cyclothymic Disorder

    • A milder form of bipolar disorder with fluctuating periods of hypomanic symptoms and depressive symptoms that are less severe than full-blown mania or depression.

    • Symptoms must be present for at least two years in adults (one year in children and adolescents) to meet the criteria for diagnosis.

  • Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

    • A type of depression that occurs at a specific time of year, usually in the winter months when daylight hours are shorter.

    • Symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, changes in sleep patterns, and social withdrawal.
